The Hidden Truths Behind Hiring in Tech:
Insights from the Experts
In today’s ever-evolving tech world, finding the right talent has never been more crucial. With technology advancing at lightning speed and work models continuously shifting, the workforce is grappling with several misconceptions about what it takes to succeed. We spoke to industry experts to get their thoughts on the challenges, the opportunities, and how artificial intelligence (AI) and remote work are shaping the future of hiring.
Misconceptions in the Tech Industry
One of the most common misunderstandings in the tech field? The belief that learning the latest technology trends guarantees top-dollar offers.
Sakshi Singh, a Talent Acquisition Partner at IBM India, offers a reality check, “People often think that just staying up-to-date with the newest tech automatically means bigger paychecks. But the real key is sticking with a company and truly mastering the fundamentals—this is what builds a successful career in the long run.”
Bharat Parmar, Technical Head at Wanbuffer, shares a similar perspective, “There’s this rush for overseas roles and higher salaries without a solid foundation. Many professionals are looking for quick wins, but that short-term thinking can really stall their long-term career growth.”
Both experts agree that deep experience is what truly matters, not just the ability to keep up with surface-level tech trends.
Ruchir Shukla, Founder of BizzAppDev, highlights another issue—the undervaluing of professional development, “There’s often a gap between what the workforce thinks they are worth and their actual skills. And that mismatch leads to frustration on both sides. We’ve also seen a reluctance to invest in growing those skills, which holds back both individuals and the companies they work for.”
The Challenges of Hiring in Tech
Hiring in the tech industry has always been tough, but with the rise of remote work and flexible contracts, it’s become even more complicated.
Soheb Khan from LTIMindtree‘s Talent Acquisition team sees a major hurdle in how remote work is affecting newer graduates, “Remote work has its perks, but for fresh graduates, it’s caused a lack of team management skills. They miss out on those critical in-person experiences where professional etiquette and soft skills are naturally developed. This absence of hands-on experience can make it difficult for companies to find candidates ready to step into leadership roles.”
Nikhil Dhiman, a Project Manager at Kanak Infosystems, points out another challenge “Impatience is a huge problem. Many candidates jump from one job to the next without taking the time to really learn the ropes. We need people who are flexible but committed to growing over the long term.”
Deepak Kumar from KSolves brings a fresh perspective to the conversation: “Patience and ownership are crucial, but often overlooked. Many candidates don’t take full ownership of their responsibilities. This lack of accountability can prevent even the most skilled hires from thriving in fast-paced, dynamic teams. Without these qualities, talent alone isn’t enough to drive success.”
Shaji Joseph, Partner at Revolve Solutions, echoes this sentiment but highlights a deeper issue: “The newer workforce struggles with accountability, communication, and commitment. They often confuse their needs with their desires, which impacts their ability to stay focused and dedicated.”
To address these issues, at MetaChase we focus on passive candidates—those who aren’t actively job hunting but are in stable roles, often during their notice periods. This way, we find people who are genuinely interested in new opportunities, not just chasing the next paycheck.
Opportunities in the Tech Industry
Despite these challenges, the tech world is full of opportunities right now, especially with the rise of AI. But it’s not a magic solution.
Sameer Ahmed, a Technology Consultant with New Horizons Cybersoft, cautions, “AI is a fantastic tool, but that’s all it is—a tool. We can use it to gather more insights and knowledge, but we shouldn’t lean on it too heavily. It’s here to amplify human creativity, not replace it.”
Sakshi Singh also notes that while AI can help make the hiring process more efficient, it has its limits, “Many candidates fail to keep their resumes and social profiles fully up to date, leaving out important details. This often leads to inaccurate results. Moreover, AI might give us better matches based on resumes, but it can’t capture the nuances of a person’s experience the way a recruiter can. It’s that human intuition that really makes the difference.”
The key, these experts say, is to blend AI’s speed and accuracy with the thoughtful insights of humans to create a process that’s both efficient and meaningful.
The Remote & Gig Economy: A Double-Edged Sword
The flexibility of remote work and the gig economy has been a game-changer for many, but it comes with its own set of challenges.
Harsh Kansagara, Co-founder of 7Span, believes freelancing isn’t the answer for all roles, “Freelancers love the freedom, but it’s not always practical for long-term projects. The timelines can be unpredictable, and remote work just doesn’t foster the same level of responsibility and commitment as being in an office.”
Surendra Surve, a freelancer and former IT Director at Capgemini, agrees, “Remote work is great for freelancers, but not for corporate environments. Corporate roles need consistency, and it’s tough to maintain that when the team is scattered remotely.”
Many companies are now turning to hybrid models to strike a balance—offering the flexibility of remote work while ensuring the structure and collaboration that in-person work fosters.
Conclusion: Embrace Change, But Stay Rooted in Fundamentals
The tech industry is at a pivotal moment. AI, remote work, and the gig economy are opening up new possibilities, but only for those who approach them with balance and thoughtfulness.
As Bharat Parmar puts it, “The future belongs to those who can master the basics while staying on top of new trends. Those who rely too much on AI or the latest tech without grounding themselves in fundamentals will miss the bigger picture.”
